How to Choose Your Hot Tub Foundation

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

Thinking about getting a hot tub, but not sure where to put it?  There are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing the perfect place for your hot tub that will enhance your enjoyment.

If you live in an area that’s gets snow, or other bad weather, we highly suggest placing your hot tub RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR. If you put your hot tub on the other side of the yard where the view is great, but have to walk across 30 feet of ice and snow just to get there, you probably won’t end up using your hot tub as much as you could if it was placed right outside the back door, kitchen door, garage door, etc.

If you live in an area where weather is not a concern, then consider the following factors when placing your new spa:

Usage  – Will you be using your hot tub for socialization and mingling with friends or is it intended to be more of a solitary place to relax and enjoy the hydrotherapy benefits?

Socialization  – If entertaining is more your thing, look for an open area to place your spa. This will allow people in the spa to converse with those outside the hot tub and will allow the spa to be part of the party.

Relaxation –  If hydrotherapy or quiet relaxation is your goal, then consider finding a private or secluded part of the yard. If no such space exists, consider putting a few tall potted plants around your spa or erecting a privacy screen.

Access to Service Compartment –  Considering building your spa into a deck or placing it up against a wall? Remember to rotate the spa so the service compartment door faces out. This will save you time and hassle should you ever need to get into the service compartment.

Path of the Sun  – You may find that you really enjoying hot tubbing during the mornings or afternoons. In order to be comfortable during all times of the day, consider the path of the sun and the spa’s orientation. You may be able to rotate or move the spa a bit to make sure the sun isn’t in your eyes, or beating down on you.

Hop-in-ability  – This is an extremely technical hot tub term we use within the industry. Bare with me while I try to explain it in layman\’s terms.  Hop-in-ability refers to the level at which one is able to easily get into their hot tub.  Regardless of weather, backyard landscaping or the prying eyes of neighbors, hop-in-ability is super duper important when it comes to actually using your spa. If your spa is easy to get into, you will use and enjoy it more than if it becomes a chore to get to every time you want to use it. So consider placing it if not directly outside a door, then relatively close to the house with a clear pathway from your door to the spa.

And Don’t Forget…

Always put your spa on a structurally sound, level (within ½” per 10\’) surface. A filled spa can weigh a great deal. Make certain that the location you choose can support the weight of your filled spa.
Locate your equipment compartment, which houses all of the electrical components, in a place where water will drain away from it. Allowing water into the equipment compartment can damage the electronics, or may result in tripping your house’s circuit breaker.

Leave yourself easy access to the circuit breakers in the subpanel (230 volt converted models), or to the GFCI on the end of the power cord (110 volt models).
Never let water get into the subpanel (230 volt converted models), or into the GFCI (110 volt models), or into the electrical outlet that your spa is plugged into.

Leave access to the equipment compartment for periodic spa care and maintenance.

What’s the difference between 110v and 220v hot tubs?

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2015

110V

One of the nicest things about 110v or “plug and play” hot tubs is that once it’s sitting in your backyard, all you have to do to enjoy it is fill it up and plug it in. You don’t need to hire an electrician and hard wire anything. Because it only draws 11 amps, it can be plugged into a regular outdoor outlet.
Additional benefits of 110v hot tubs:

Simple, fast set up. All you have to do is plug it in.
You can finally own a hot tub even if you’re renting your home, since you don’t have to alter any electrical wiring.
Because they can be plugged in anywhere, can easily rearrange your backyard or take your spa with you if you move.

220V

Now let’s talk about converting a plug-n-play spa to 220 volts. A misconception that we hear all the time is that converting a spa to 220 volts will increase the jet power. That is completely false. Converting a hot tub from 110v to 220v has absolutely no effect whatsoever on jet performance. You will however see a difference in the heating time and pump power. When the hot tub is converted to 220v, the heater gets more power. With Freeflow spas, the heater goes from 1.5 horse power to 3.5 horse power.

Because of the added power of the heater, the spa is able to heat the water faster. This is really only a benefit when you are heating the water for the first time. Both 110v and 220v spas will keep the water hot around the clock.
220v spas can heat the water while the jets are on high or low. 110v spas can only heat the water while the jets are on low.

All Freeflow Spas come standard as a 110v plug-n-play hot tub, but can easily be converted to 220 volts by a licensed electrician. And regardless of your chosen voltage, all Freeflow Spas come fully insulated for maximum heat retention so your spa is always hot and ready, whenever you are.

Contact us when you’re ready to get pricing on a Freeflow Spa!

Better Sleep and your Hot Tub

Hot Tubs Bellbrook – Portable Spa Dealer Gives 3 Tips For National Sleep Awareness Month

Portable Spa Sale Bellbrook, OH – Hot Spring Spas Dayton Shares “Three Ways to Sleep Healthier.” Offers Free Hot Tub Spa Test Soaks to Bellbrook, OH Residents!

Bellbrook, OH 45305 – “On the whole, Americans get far less sleep than they should. Busy lives and hectic schedules are the main reason. People tend to think of sleep as something that can be put off in lieu of more important things,” said George Dalhamer, President and CEO of Hot Spring Spas of Dayton.

“The drawback to that line of thinking is a serious accumulation of possibilities ranging from mild fatigue and lack of concentration to severe depression and even illness,” continued Dalhamer. Here are three ways to sleep healthier.

Cut Out Caffeine – Even die hard coffee drinkers who think they aren’t affected by caffeine at bed time can suffer the effects of the chemicals when sleeping. Many people have a hard time falling asleep after drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages in the evening, but even when a person can fall asleep, they are less likely to sleep soundly or deeply. Healthy sleep requires a period of REM, deep sleep, in order to fully revive the body. Cutting out caffeine entirely, or at least, limiting it to early in the day will help improve sleep habits and allow for a more restful sleep.

Create a Better Sleep Environment – Get rid of clutter in the bedroom. Paint the room pleasing, soothing colors. Eliminate electronic devices and keep the temperature a comfortable 60 to 75 degrees to promote the best possible sleep atmosphere.

Get a Bellbrook Hot Tub at Home – Along with creating a soothing, spa-like atmosphere right in the home, having a hot tub in the yard, on a porch or patio helps improve sleep habits. The National Sleep Foundation lists soaking in a hot tub along with establishing proper sleep schedules as a great way to help people sleep better. Soaking in hot water raises the body temperature and relaxes muscles making it easier for a person to fall asleep, and increases the likelihood of sleeping deeper and more soundly.

Endorphins & Hot Tubs – April is National Stress Awareness Month

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Endorphins are mother nature’s natural pain and stress fighters and the soothing massage provided by a hot tub helps stimulate the release of endorphins helping to dissolve away the stress and tension of the day.  But why is the production of endorphins so important to our overall health and wellness?

Stress and pain are the two most common factors leading to the production of endorphins.   Those endorphins interact with receptors in the brain to reduce our perception of pain acting similarly to that of morphine and codeine without the negative side effect of those drugs – addiction.

As if the decreased feelings of pain and stress weren’t enough, the release of endorphins also leads to the feelings of euphoria as well as a control of appetite, increase of the release of sex hormones and improved immune response.  Also with higher levels of endorphins, we experience less pain and have fewer negative effects of stress.

Although the release of endorphins varies among individuals, it is known that increases are affected by increases in exercise and the consumption of certain foods such as chocolate and hot peppers.  The release of endorphins upon ingestion of chocolate likely explains the feeling of comfort and the craving for chocolates.

The use of hot water therapy also aides in the release of endorphins within the body helping to reduce the potential negative effects of stress. With the positive relaxing benefits of soaking in the swirling hot waters of a hot tub coupled with the obvious benefits of an increased release of endorphins working to provide you with maximum benefits, the regular use of a hot tub should certainly be part of one’s daily activities for improved health and wellness.

So the next time you feel increased stress starting to creep up on you, think endorphins and when you think endorphins think hot tub therapy and maybe a chocolate.  You will feel that stress drift away while your body enjoys the additional benefit of heat, buoyancy and massage all working in concert to provide the maximum benefit of  hot tub soaking!

Happy hot tubbing

SPA TIPS: Spring Cleaning – Hot Tub that is!

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

It’s the beginning of spring and it’s the perfect time to change your spa’s water.  The winter has been a tough one and it’s probably been hard on your spa’s water as well.  So pick that nice spring day and do your hot tub spring cleaning.

If you have had your spa for a couple of years and you have not “flushed” your spa, this may be a great time to do so.  Flushing cleans the interior of your spa including plumbing and returns it back to its new condition .  We recommend flushing at least once every two years.  If you are flushing, please follow  flushing directions on the product container closely.

When its time to drain your spa, start by disconnecting your electric to your spa by either unplugging (if it is a 110V system) or turning your breakers off.  Once your power is off, you can begin draining your spa by simply attaching a hose to the primary drain of your spa (the one with the valve) running the hose out to where you want the water to drain and opening the valve.  If your spa is located where water will not harm the area, you may drain the spa where it sits without attaching a hose.  This draining process can take several hours to complete.  If during the night the temperature is going to stay above freezing, you could start the draining in the evening and then by morning your spa should be drained.

Once you start draining, remove your filters and clean them with a filter cleaning solution either the soak method or the spray method.  This is important to maintain proper filtration and flow through your spa.  Don’t forget to rinse your filters thoroughly after cleaning.  Any residual left on the filter from the cleaning solution will cause tremendous foaming in the spa.

After your spa is drained, clean the interior surface if needed with either baking soda on a sponge or a spa cleaning pad.  Once your spa is clean, begin refilling your spa by placing your hose in the filter staind pipe.  If your spa has multiple filters, use the filter stand pipe that has the grey top (it has a hollow tube).  By filling this way, you help purge air from the system.

When the spa is filled, turn your power back on and start your normal spa start-up procedure for your chemical system.

Finally, this is also a great time to maintain your spa’s cover.  Clean the cover with a mild cleaning solution and rinse.  If you notice any “dipping” of your cover towards the middle, it may be time to “flip” the cores of the cover.  Over time, they may begin to sag and by flipping them you slow that process down and make your cover last much longer.  Any question on how, please call the store for instructions.  Also this is a great time after the cover dries to coat the cover with a good vinyl treatment such as Protectant 303.

And for those who would like all of this done “magically”, call Hot Spring Spas of Dayton and ask for our “Signature Valet Service”.

APRIL- Stress Awareness Month

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. As a result, the person becomes overworked and stress-related tension builds.

Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress — a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.

We all have stress in our lives so lets make sure we use our HotSpring Spa or Finnleo sauna so we don’t fall into the negative effects of stress .  Whether its immersing ourselves into the warm swirling water of our Hot Spring Spa or the warmth of our Finnleo sauna relieving our stress from our lives, make sure we are using these stress relivers so we can live a better and healthier life, not to metion it will help us feel and look younger.

We are Certified – SO WHAT!

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

With all the competition in the Spa and Sauna business, how is someone supposed to know who is the right company to trust with your hot tub needs?  This is where a third party certification process serves the public well.

The trade certification program managed by BigFish Publication offers such a certification program within the hot tub (spa) industry.  This certification is NOT a “buy-in” process, however it is a process that is centered around an audit that identifies and measures many points within the typical retail hot tub store business.  This includes but is not limited to items such as retail store location(s), service centers, continuing education for it’s employees, better business bureau ratings, customer testimonials, etc.

Within the southwestern Ohio region, we are proud to be the only certified hot tub dealer currently listed in the TradeCertification program.  Please view the attached video for addition information on Hot Tub Dealer Certification.

So when your ready, and we hope it’s soon, to invest in your health & wellness with a Hot Spring Spa or Finnleo Sauna, be sure that you are trusting your business with a certified hot tub retailer.  Look for the “Certified Hot Tub Retailer” sticker for your peace of mind.

Why a Hot Tub; Why Now; Why a Hot Spring Spa

Monday, October 18th, 2010

WHY A HOT TUB?

The benefits of hot water hydrotherapy can hardly be argued. The use of hot water therapy goes all the way back to the early Romans when they used the hot water in common baths for therapy and relaxation.

This has been further justified by the medical use of hot water therapy for muscle, joint and athletic applications. Many a physician has also recommmended and even prescribed hot water therapy for stress, sleep disorders, arthritis, fybromyalgiaand many other ailments.

It has only been during the last few decades that this type of therapy has become readily available to the public in the form of residential hot tubs.  Now take take this wrong, this is not new, it is that the industry has only of late designed and perfected new features that has made the hot tubs truely a device that provides unparalleled hot water therapy and now withe features that minimize the efforts needed to maintain those hot tubs.

SO why NOT invest in a hot tub that provides all those benefits for all of us who struggle with the challenges that are thrown our way every day?

WHY NOW

No one can argue with the fact that the challenges that we face today are at levels never experienced before.  With the increases in our daily challenges, many are faced with increased stress which in turn can lead to many physical and non-physical ailments.

But with the never-ending push to be conservative with our budgets, it has become increasingly difficult to justify the expenditure for a hot tub often times because such a purchase would be considered a luxury.  However, when the numerous benefits that are provided by a hot tub are considered, many might feel that a hot tub is NOT a luxury but more of a “health and wellness” necessity.

Let’s consider for a moment the person who is riddled with arthritis and who’s ability to walk is limited only to that asisted by mechanic means, eg with a walker.  The pain that invades their bodies on a regular basis can only be controlled either by the use of harsh, expensive medicines or with the regular use of a hot tub.  In this case, the hot tub is certainly NOT a luxury!

How about the otherwise healthy ageing individual who discovers a new pain about every day and excepts the fact that this simply comes with age.  If that person learns to cope with those pains with the regular use of a hot tub – is that a luxury?

Or even the person who has trouble falling asleep at night because of the stress of the times.  When they opt to use a hot tub on a regular basis in leu of a traditional drug that in many cases can become habit forming, is that a luxury?

I think that you can see in all of these cases the choice to “treat” yourself with hot water therapy is certainly a “health and wellness” choice NOT a luxury choice!

Times have changed.  The big party hot tub of the past is truely a picture of the past. Most hot tub customers in the earlier days were just that – “I want the biggest, badest hot tub with all the goodies on it!”  That fad has past and the trend has turned towards smaller, more personal hot tubs to address the stress reduction needs of today.

So why now – because we need them now more then ever to relieve our stress, to soothe our aches and pains, to help us sleep and to help us achieve a better quality of life!

Why a Hot Spring Spa?

Hot Spring Spas have lead the hot tub industry for almost 35 years.  They have developed many of the industries firsts that have now become the standard in the industry.

Taking acre not to be tempted to follow the fads, they have continued to develop features that truely have a lasting benefit to the customer.  They understand the “reality of daily use” of a hot tub and they continue to develop features that address those needs.

They understand the importance of creating a quality product that performs day in and day out.  They understand the importance of low operating costs and all of their spas are built on that energy efficient platform.  They know how important jet variety is as compared to simply putting more of the same types of jets in a hot tub.  And they understand the importance of building a hot tub that is virtually maintenace free relieving you of the task of adding harsh chemicals to your hot tub on a regular basis – chemicals that that can not only effect you but also the environment.

Hot Spring Spas has also realized the importance of costs with respect to the customer’s inital investment.  It has never been more important then it is today. WIth that in mind, they designed a new line of “value added” hot tubs at a price that can fit everyone’s budget.

So let’s learn something from those whom we have followed and utilize hot water therapy as a necessity NOT a luxury.  The challenges we all face today are possibly greater than the have ever been in the past and the need for hot water therapy is also at it’s peak.
