Just for the Health of It

The month of February is recognized as American Heart Month by the American Heart Association. This is a time of the year designated to reminding everyone to take a deeper look at their heart health and to recommend healthy tips to friends and family.

February 2, 2018 –  Everyone and their cousin knows that hot tubs have the power to make our muscles feel great and melt our stress away. We’ve all hopefully experienced the wonderful joy of a relaxing soak and the noticeable immediate effects it has on our body and minds. The sound and movement of the hot water soothe and brings about a slow smile of euphoria as our aches disappear, even if just for the moment. And If you’ve never experienced this wonder, you need to come in soon for a test soak!

You see, hot tubs provide a variety of health benefits, from the alleviation of mental distress such as anxiety and the obvious physical benefits such as the loosening of stiff joints. What if I were to tell there were a plethora of physical benefits not immediately noticeable but beneficial behind the scenes of our biology? Would you believe me?

The Heart Muscle

One such area that greatly benefits from hydrotherapy is the heart. We obviously cannot see our hearts, but every choice in our lives affects its health, so it is often the focal point of our wellness journey. Society obsesses over heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart attacks, and… heartburn (absolute misnomer!) But that conversation does not often mention hot tubs and cardiovascular health in the same sentence, except murmurings of avoidance, due to extreme caution, premature conclusions, and liability concerns. I will be clearing up some of the top Hot Tub myths soon in this series, but today I want to talk about the benefits of Hotspring hydrotherapy and your heart.

What Hot Tubs do to your cardiovascular system

The standard human temperature is 98.6 ˚F, while hot tubs typically range anywhere from 100-104 ˚F. Due to the relatively higher heat difference, the smooth muscles surrounding the blood vessels relax. This, in turn, causes blood vessels to widen, a process known as vasodilation. This dilation brings about two main effects.

A Cardio Workout

Immersing in warm water raises your body temperature, causing your blood vessels to dilate and increases circulation.

Increased blood flow means that there is more oxygen-rich blood flowing to all muscles, one of which is the heart Although the heart distributes blood throughout the body, as a muscle itself, blood vessels called coronary arteries bring blood to the heart…from the heart. The cardiac volume increases by nearly one-third with immersion to the neck, providing you with the same benefits as a cardio workout.

A Blood Pressure Drop

Blood vessels vasolidate and blood flow increases due to lowering of blood vessel wall resistance. The wider radius of blood vessels makes it easier for your heart to pump blood. Additionally, the reduction of gravity due to well…floating in water… reduces the force your heart needs to work against. This action reduces blood pressure, in both patients with normal and high blood pressure.

For persons with hypotension, it is recommended to limit your time in hot water or to lower the temperature.

Unique Benefits

Hot tubs offer the unique position of raising heart rate while lowering blood pressure, something that does not occur in traditional exercise (whereas both factors go up). 20 minutes of hydrotherapy cannot be compared to intense cardio training but is comparable to a casual walk of the same duration.

In addition to the circulatory increase to all muscles including the heart, hydrotherapy balances the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This equilibrium mimics the stress relaxing practice of meditation, amazing for a healthy heart on a different level.

Recap

The increased cardiac volume simulates light exercise while lowering blood pressure. While the awesome benefit of lowered blood pressure slowly returns to its previous state within 10 minutes of exiting the water, the balancing effect on the autonomic nervous system is retained for hours after, making daily soaking an excellent routine for your overall wellness, especially cardiac health. Keep these healthy heart benefits in mind during 2018’s American Heart Month.

Help your heart…just for the health of it. We wholeheartedly agree!

Today I’ve examined the underknown health benefits for your heart. Next week tune into 5 Hot Tub and Sauna Heart Myths that will touch upon this subject more.

Honor Flight

Tuesday, May 16th, 2017

HONOR FLIGHT IS IMPORTANT!
Time is of the Essence.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day (2011 data). Honor Flight Network will continue to do whatever it takes to fulfill the dreams of our veterans and help our heroes travel absolutely free.
In addition to the World War II veterans, program efforts will then focus on our Korean War and then Vietnam War veterans, honoring them similarly. (Note: Dayton’s hub is already accepting applications from WWII, Korean and Vietnam Veterans.)

MISSION STATEMENT:
Transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
GOAL: Helping every single veteran in America, willing and able to get on a plane or a bus, visit THEIR memorial.
PRIORITY: Top priority is given to America’s most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.
ELIGIBILITY: All men and women serving stateside or overseas.
PHILOSOPHY: Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it’s equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial.
MOTTO: “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” – Will Rogers

The History of Honor Flight
The inaugural Honor Flight took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking twelve World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC. In August of 2005, an ever-expanding waiting list of veterans led our transition to commercial airline carriers with the goal of accommodating as many veterans as possible. Partnering with HonorAir in Hendersonville, North Carolina, we formed the “Honor Flight Network.” Today, we continue working aggressively to expand our programs to other cities across the nation.
How a Dream Became a Reality.
The Honor Flight Network program was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain. Earl wanted to honor the veterans he had taken care of for the past 27 years. After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, Earl was hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs to work in a small clinic in Springfield, Ohio. In May of 2004, the World War II Memorial was finally completed and dedicated in Washington, D.C. and quickly became the topic of discussion among his World War II veteran patients.
Earl repeatedly asked these veterans if they would ever travel out to visit THEIR memorial. Most felt that eventually, somehow, they would make it to D.C., perhaps with a family member or friend.
As summer turned to fall and then winter, these same veterans returned to the clinic for their follow-up visits. Earl asked if they accomplished their dream of visiting the World War II Memorial. By now, for most of the veterans he asked, reality had settled in; it was clear to most that it simply wasn’t financially or physically possible for them to make the journey. Most of these senior heroes were in their 80s and lacked the physical and mental wherewithal to complete a trip on their own. Families and friends also lacked the resources and time to complete the three- to four-day trip to the nation’s capital.
The Spark of an Idea.
Earl could tell that the majority of the veterans had given up all hope of ever visiting the memorial that was specifically created to honor their services as well as the services of their fellow comrades who had paid the ultimate sacrifice. That’s when Earl decided that there had to be a way to get these heroes to D.C. to see their memorial.
In addition to being a physician assistant, Earl was also a private pilot and a member of one of our nation’s largest and best aero clubs located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. And things started coming together.
In December of 2004, Earl asked one of his World War II veteran patients if it would be all right if Earl personally flew him out to D.C., free of charge, to visit his memorial. Mr. Loy broke down and cried. He told Earl that at his age he would probably never get to see his memorial otherwise, and graciously accepted the offer.
Earl posed the same question to a second World War II veteran a week later. He too cried and enthusiastically accepted the trip. It didn’t take long for Earl to realize that there were many veterans who would have the same reaction. So he started asking for help from other pilots to make these dreams a reality. In January of 2005, Earl addressed about 150 members of the aero club during a safety meeting, outlining a volunteer program to fly veterans to their memorial. There were two major stipulations to his request. The first was that the veterans pay nothing. The entire aircraft rental ($600 to $1200 for the day) would have to be paid solely by the pilots. The second was that the pilots personally escort the veterans around D.C. for the entire day.
After Earl spoke, eleven pilots who had never met his patients stepped up to volunteer. And Honor Flight was born.

The Dream Takes Flight.
Soon other dedicated volunteers joined, a board was formed, funds were raised and that first flight took to the air in May of 2005. Six small planes flew 12 very happy veterans out to Manassas, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. Vans then transported the pilots and veterans into D.C. and to the World War II Memorial. The responses from both the veterans and the pilots were overwhelming. It was an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Soon other flights were planned and made. So many veterans wanted to participate that commercial aircraft were used to accommodate forty veterans at a time, including many in wheelchairs. By the end of the first year, Honor Flight had transported 137 World War II veterans to their memorial.
In 2006, commercial flights were exclusively used due to the number of veterans on the waiting list and adverse weather conditions which prohibited small aircraft from participating on a regular schedule. Locally, another 300 veterans completed the journey during that year.
Word Spread. And HonorAir Arrived, Right On Time.
The mission and ideals of the program began to spread across America. Other cities and states became aware of our efforts and we fostered working relationships with dedicated community leaders in several states. Jeff Miller in Hendersonville, North Carolina led the expansion into areas not serviced by direct commercial flights to the Washington, D.C. area. He accomplished what was thought to be impossible, organizing and obtaining funding to fly an entire commercial jet filled with local area veterans to visit the monument.
This was the beginning of Henderson County’s HonorAir. On September 23rd and again on the 24th the US Airways-chartered jet was filled with World War II veterans and their guardians. Jeff repeated his success on November 4th of 2006. In less than three months, HonorAir had flown over 300 World War II veterans to D.C.! Jeff quickly shared his expertise with others, who started HonorAir programs in several other areas of the country. By the end of 2006, 891 World War II veterans across America realized their dream of visiting their memorial.
We are proud to say that (1) all of our heroes had a safe and memorable trip and (2) we were able to raise sufficient funds so that every veteran flew absolutely free.
The First to Charter, the First to Finish…
24 September 2007, Honor Air out of Hendersonville, NC and Henderson County, NC were the first city and the first county in the nation to fly 100% of their WWII veterans to their memorials.
Southwest Airlines “Grab your bag…It’s On”
In May 2008, Southwest Airlines stepped up by donating thousands of free tickets, and was named the official commercial carrier of the Honor Flight Network in a joint press release. It is because of this generous donation that the Honor Flight Network undoubtedly now has more flexibility, more opportunity and are now more than ever able to serve more veterans on our “anxious waiting list” than would have been possible given the economy and the decrease in charitable contributions.
The Future of Honor Flight… Help Us Meet Our Goal.
The future looks bright for our country’s World War II veterans. In February of 2006, Earl and Jeff combined efforts and co-founded Honor Flight Network. The leaders of various flying programs, and others interested in starting similar projects in their own regions, attended a summit in Washington, D.C. with over 100 people in attendance. Now a network of participating programs is in place to assist our senior heroes. Resources are pooled, experience is shared and alliances are formed throughout America to get World War II veterans to their precious memorial safely.
Honor Flight Network has established an aggressive goal. Through the end of 2011 we transported more than 81,000 WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial. The program at that time had 134 hubs in 42 states. Due to the senior age of our heroes, and the prediction that we were losing approximately 640 of them daily, we were committed to do all within our power to make their dream a reality. Our current focus will remain on World War II veterans and those veterans from any war who have a terminal illness. However, our vision has grown beyond World War II.
Honoring All Our Veterans.
Already happening now, Honor Flight Network will also pay tribute to America’s other heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, followed by veterans of more current wars. They, too, have given so much and it’s time we show them that their efforts are not forgotten. Honor Flight Network has learned a lot over these last four years and one point that stands out is that our veteran heroes aren’t asking for recognition. It is our position that they deserve it. Our program is just a small token of our appreciation for those that gave so much.
Please help us continue to make their dream of visiting THEIR memorial, a reality.
HONOR FLIGHT NETWORK — our way of saying to all our veterans — one more TOUR with HONOR.
Consider The Following:
In our 1st year, 2005, HFN safely transported 137 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 2nd year, 2006, HFN safely transported 891 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 3rd year, 2007, HFN safely transported 5,000 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 4th year, 2008, HFN safely transported 11,137 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 5th year, 2009, HFN safely transported 17,832 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 6th year, 2010, HFN safely transported 22,149 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 7th year, 2011, HFN safely transported 18,055 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
In our 8th year, 2012, HFN safely transported 17,424 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
In our 9th year, 2013, HFN safely transported 18,784 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
In our 10th year, 2014, HFN safely transported 21,261 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
In our 11th year, 2015, HFD safely transported 20,886 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
In our 12th year, 2016, HFD safely transported 20,558 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
With the continued support of grateful Americans, by the end of the 2015 flying season, HFN (including bus, RV and van transportation hubs) transported 180,261 veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and other conflicts to see the memorials built to honor their suffering and sacrifice to keep this great nation free and a world leader. In addition, 125,729 guardians paid their own way for the privilege to take care of these heroes since Honor Flight’s inception, and there are 131 current hubs serving 45 states!
This program is run on the determination of the local boards and the generosity of local regions, businesses and individuals. Volunteerism is alive and well, and this program is a shining example of what is important and what our nation cares about. There are no government funds provided, yet to this day, no veteran has ever paid for one of these trips.

Arthritis Benefits

If you are one of the 46 million Americans affected by arthritis, soaking in your Hot Spring spa can help ease your pain. Joint inflammation from arthritis causes swelling, pain and stiffness, often resulting in the loss of joint movement or function. Immersion in warm water produces hydrostatic pressure on the body that results in reduced joint inflammation and increased mobility*. Spas give you the soothing warm water and buoyancy needed to release tension and improve your quality of life.

For even more relief, use the Arthritis Foundation’s hot tub tips to gently exercise and practice flexibility as you soak.

The use of hot water or heat is recommended for many people with arthritis but not all. Always consult your physician.
