HONOR FLIGHT IS IMPORTANT!
Time is of the Essence.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day (2011 data). Honor Flight Network will continue to do whatever it takes to fulfill the dreams of our veterans and help our heroes travel absolutely free.
In addition to the World War II veterans, program efforts will then focus on our Korean War and then Vietnam War veterans, honoring them similarly. (Note: Dayton’s hub is already accepting applications from WWII, Korean and Vietnam Veterans.)

MISSION STATEMENT:
Transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.
GOAL: Helping every single veteran in America, willing and able to get on a plane or a bus, visit THEIR memorial.
PRIORITY: Top priority is given to America’s most senior heroes — survivors of World War II and any veteran with a terminal illness who wishes to visit THEIR memorial. The program will naturally transition to Korean War, Vietnam War and all other veterans who served, on a chronological basis.
ELIGIBILITY: All men and women serving stateside or overseas.
PHILOSOPHY: Since America felt it was important to build a memorial to the service and the ultimate sacrifice of her veterans, the Honor Flight Network believes it’s equally important that they actually get to visit and experience THEIR memorial.
MOTTO: “We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.” – Will Rogers

The History of Honor Flight
The inaugural Honor Flight took place in May of 2005. Six small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking twelve World War II veterans on a visit to the memorial in Washington, DC. In August of 2005, an ever-expanding waiting list of veterans led our transition to commercial airline carriers with the goal of accommodating as many veterans as possible. Partnering with HonorAir in Hendersonville, North Carolina, we formed the “Honor Flight Network.” Today, we continue working aggressively to expand our programs to other cities across the nation.
How a Dream Became a Reality.
The Honor Flight Network program was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain. Earl wanted to honor the veterans he had taken care of for the past 27 years. After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, Earl was hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs to work in a small clinic in Springfield, Ohio. In May of 2004, the World War II Memorial was finally completed and dedicated in Washington, D.C. and quickly became the topic of discussion among his World War II veteran patients.
Earl repeatedly asked these veterans if they would ever travel out to visit THEIR memorial. Most felt that eventually, somehow, they would make it to D.C., perhaps with a family member or friend.
As summer turned to fall and then winter, these same veterans returned to the clinic for their follow-up visits. Earl asked if they accomplished their dream of visiting the World War II Memorial. By now, for most of the veterans he asked, reality had settled in; it was clear to most that it simply wasn’t financially or physically possible for them to make the journey. Most of these senior heroes were in their 80s and lacked the physical and mental wherewithal to complete a trip on their own. Families and friends also lacked the resources and time to complete the three- to four-day trip to the nation’s capital.
The Spark of an Idea.
Earl could tell that the majority of the veterans had given up all hope of ever visiting the memorial that was specifically created to honor their services as well as the services of their fellow comrades who had paid the ultimate sacrifice. That’s when Earl decided that there had to be a way to get these heroes to D.C. to see their memorial.
In addition to being a physician assistant, Earl was also a private pilot and a member of one of our nation’s largest and best aero clubs located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. And things started coming together.
In December of 2004, Earl asked one of his World War II veteran patients if it would be all right if Earl personally flew him out to D.C., free of charge, to visit his memorial. Mr. Loy broke down and cried. He told Earl that at his age he would probably never get to see his memorial otherwise, and graciously accepted the offer.
Earl posed the same question to a second World War II veteran a week later. He too cried and enthusiastically accepted the trip. It didn’t take long for Earl to realize that there were many veterans who would have the same reaction. So he started asking for help from other pilots to make these dreams a reality. In January of 2005, Earl addressed about 150 members of the aero club during a safety meeting, outlining a volunteer program to fly veterans to their memorial. There were two major stipulations to his request. The first was that the veterans pay nothing. The entire aircraft rental ($600 to $1200 for the day) would have to be paid solely by the pilots. The second was that the pilots personally escort the veterans around D.C. for the entire day.
After Earl spoke, eleven pilots who had never met his patients stepped up to volunteer. And Honor Flight was born.

The Dream Takes Flight.
Soon other dedicated volunteers joined, a board was formed, funds were raised and that first flight took to the air in May of 2005. Six small planes flew 12 very happy veterans out to Manassas, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. Vans then transported the pilots and veterans into D.C. and to the World War II Memorial. The responses from both the veterans and the pilots were overwhelming. It was an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Soon other flights were planned and made. So many veterans wanted to participate that commercial aircraft were used to accommodate forty veterans at a time, including many in wheelchairs. By the end of the first year, Honor Flight had transported 137 World War II veterans to their memorial.
In 2006, commercial flights were exclusively used due to the number of veterans on the waiting list and adverse weather conditions which prohibited small aircraft from participating on a regular schedule. Locally, another 300 veterans completed the journey during that year.
Word Spread. And HonorAir Arrived, Right On Time.
The mission and ideals of the program began to spread across America. Other cities and states became aware of our efforts and we fostered working relationships with dedicated community leaders in several states. Jeff Miller in Hendersonville, North Carolina led the expansion into areas not serviced by direct commercial flights to the Washington, D.C. area. He accomplished what was thought to be impossible, organizing and obtaining funding to fly an entire commercial jet filled with local area veterans to visit the monument.
This was the beginning of Henderson County’s HonorAir. On September 23rd and again on the 24th the US Airways-chartered jet was filled with World War II veterans and their guardians. Jeff repeated his success on November 4th of 2006. In less than three months, HonorAir had flown over 300 World War II veterans to D.C.! Jeff quickly shared his expertise with others, who started HonorAir programs in several other areas of the country. By the end of 2006, 891 World War II veterans across America realized their dream of visiting their memorial.
We are proud to say that (1) all of our heroes had a safe and memorable trip and (2) we were able to raise sufficient funds so that every veteran flew absolutely free.
The First to Charter, the First to Finish…
24 September 2007, Honor Air out of Hendersonville, NC and Henderson County, NC were the first city and the first county in the nation to fly 100% of their WWII veterans to their memorials.
Southwest Airlines “Grab your bag…It’s On”
In May 2008, Southwest Airlines stepped up by donating thousands of free tickets, and was named the official commercial carrier of the Honor Flight Network in a joint press release. It is because of this generous donation that the Honor Flight Network undoubtedly now has more flexibility, more opportunity and are now more than ever able to serve more veterans on our “anxious waiting list” than would have been possible given the economy and the decrease in charitable contributions.
The Future of Honor Flight… Help Us Meet Our Goal.
The future looks bright for our country’s World War II veterans. In February of 2006, Earl and Jeff combined efforts and co-founded Honor Flight Network. The leaders of various flying programs, and others interested in starting similar projects in their own regions, attended a summit in Washington, D.C. with over 100 people in attendance. Now a network of participating programs is in place to assist our senior heroes. Resources are pooled, experience is shared and alliances are formed throughout America to get World War II veterans to their precious memorial safely.
Honor Flight Network has established an aggressive goal. Through the end of 2011 we transported more than 81,000 WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial. The program at that time had 134 hubs in 42 states. Due to the senior age of our heroes, and the prediction that we were losing approximately 640 of them daily, we were committed to do all within our power to make their dream a reality. Our current focus will remain on World War II veterans and those veterans from any war who have a terminal illness. However, our vision has grown beyond World War II.
Honoring All Our Veterans.
Already happening now, Honor Flight Network will also pay tribute to America’s other heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, followed by veterans of more current wars. They, too, have given so much and it’s time we show them that their efforts are not forgotten. Honor Flight Network has learned a lot over these last four years and one point that stands out is that our veteran heroes aren’t asking for recognition. It is our position that they deserve it. Our program is just a small token of our appreciation for those that gave so much.
Please help us continue to make their dream of visiting THEIR memorial, a reality.
HONOR FLIGHT NETWORK — our way of saying to all our veterans — one more TOUR with HONOR.
Consider The Following:
In our 1st year, 2005, HFN safely transported 137 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 2nd year, 2006, HFN safely transported 891 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 3rd year, 2007, HFN safely transported 5,000 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 4th year, 2008, HFN safely transported 11,137 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 5th year, 2009, HFN safely transported 17,832 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!
In our 6th year, 2010, HFN safely transported 22,149 veterans to see THEIR memorials, at no cost to the veterans!

In our 12th year, 2016, HFD safely transported 20,558 veterans to see THEIR memorials at no cost to the veterans!
With the continued support of grateful Americans, by the end of the 2015 flying season, HFN (including bus, RV and van transportation hubs) transported 180,261 veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam and other conflicts to see the memorials built to honor their suffering and sacrifice to keep this great nation free and a world leader. In addition, 125,729 guardians paid their own way for the privilege to take care of these heroes since Honor Flight’s inception, and there are 131 current hubs serving 45 states!
This program is run on the determination of the local boards and the generosity of local regions, businesses and individuals. Volunteerism is alive and well, and this program is a shining example of what is important and what our nation cares about. There are no government funds provided, yet to this day, no veteran has ever paid for one of these trips.

Hot Tubs Bellbrook – Portable Spa Dealer Gives 3 Tips For National Sleep Awareness Month

Portable Spa Sale Bellbrook, OH – Hot Spring Spas Dayton Shares “Three Ways to Sleep Healthier.” Offers Free Hot Tub Spa Test Soaks to Bellbrook, OH Residents!

Bellbrook, OH 45305 – “On the whole, Americans get far less sleep than they should. Busy lives and hectic schedules are the main reason. People tend to think of sleep as something that can be put off in lieu of more important things,” said George Dalhamer, President and CEO of Hot Spring Spas of Dayton.

“The drawback to that line of thinking is a serious accumulation of possibilities ranging from mild fatigue and lack of concentration to severe depression and even illness,” continued Dalhamer. Here are three ways to sleep healthier.

Cut Out Caffeine – Even die hard coffee drinkers who think they aren’t affected by caffeine at bed time can suffer the effects of the chemicals when sleeping. Many people have a hard time falling asleep after drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages in the evening, but even when a person can fall asleep, they are less likely to sleep soundly or deeply. Healthy sleep requires a period of REM, deep sleep, in order to fully revive the body. Cutting out caffeine entirely, or at least, limiting it to early in the day will help improve sleep habits and allow for a more restful sleep.

Create a Better Sleep Environment – Get rid of clutter in the bedroom. Paint the room pleasing, soothing colors. Eliminate electronic devices and keep the temperature a comfortable 60 to 75 degrees to promote the best possible sleep atmosphere.

Get a Bellbrook Hot Tub at Home – Along with creating a soothing, spa-like atmosphere right in the home, having a hot tub in the yard, on a porch or patio helps improve sleep habits. The National Sleep Foundation lists soaking in a hot tub along with establishing proper sleep schedules as a great way to help people sleep better. Soaking in hot water raises the body temperature and relaxes muscles making it easier for a person to fall asleep, and increases the likelihood of sleeping deeper and more soundly.

Endorphins & Hot Tubs – April is National Stress Awareness Month

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

Endorphins are mother nature’s natural pain and stress fighters and the soothing massage provided by a hot tub helps stimulate the release of endorphins helping to dissolve away the stress and tension of the day.  But why is the production of endorphins so important to our overall health and wellness?

Stress and pain are the two most common factors leading to the production of endorphins.   Those endorphins interact with receptors in the brain to reduce our perception of pain acting similarly to that of morphine and codeine without the negative side effect of those drugs – addiction.

As if the decreased feelings of pain and stress weren’t enough, the release of endorphins also leads to the feelings of euphoria as well as a control of appetite, increase of the release of sex hormones and improved immune response.  Also with higher levels of endorphins, we experience less pain and have fewer negative effects of stress.

Although the release of endorphins varies among individuals, it is known that increases are affected by increases in exercise and the consumption of certain foods such as chocolate and hot peppers.  The release of endorphins upon ingestion of chocolate likely explains the feeling of comfort and the craving for chocolates.

The use of hot water therapy also aides in the release of endorphins within the body helping to reduce the potential negative effects of stress. With the positive relaxing benefits of soaking in the swirling hot waters of a hot tub coupled with the obvious benefits of an increased release of endorphins working to provide you with maximum benefits, the regular use of a hot tub should certainly be part of one’s daily activities for improved health and wellness.

So the next time you feel increased stress starting to creep up on you, think endorphins and when you think endorphins think hot tub therapy and maybe a chocolate.  You will feel that stress drift away while your body enjoys the additional benefit of heat, buoyancy and massage all working in concert to provide the maximum benefit of  hot tub soaking!

Happy hot tubbing

SPA TIPS: Spring Cleaning – Hot Tub that is!

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

It’s the beginning of spring and it’s the perfect time to change your spa’s water.  The winter has been a tough one and it’s probably been hard on your spa’s water as well.  So pick that nice spring day and do your hot tub spring cleaning.

If you have had your spa for a couple of years and you have not “flushed” your spa, this may be a great time to do so.  Flushing cleans the interior of your spa including plumbing and returns it back to its new condition .  We recommend flushing at least once every two years.  If you are flushing, please follow  flushing directions on the product container closely.

When its time to drain your spa, start by disconnecting your electric to your spa by either unplugging (if it is a 110V system) or turning your breakers off.  Once your power is off, you can begin draining your spa by simply attaching a hose to the primary drain of your spa (the one with the valve) running the hose out to where you want the water to drain and opening the valve.  If your spa is located where water will not harm the area, you may drain the spa where it sits without attaching a hose.  This draining process can take several hours to complete.  If during the night the temperature is going to stay above freezing, you could start the draining in the evening and then by morning your spa should be drained.

Once you start draining, remove your filters and clean them with a filter cleaning solution either the soak method or the spray method.  This is important to maintain proper filtration and flow through your spa.  Don’t forget to rinse your filters thoroughly after cleaning.  Any residual left on the filter from the cleaning solution will cause tremendous foaming in the spa.

After your spa is drained, clean the interior surface if needed with either baking soda on a sponge or a spa cleaning pad.  Once your spa is clean, begin refilling your spa by placing your hose in the filter staind pipe.  If your spa has multiple filters, use the filter stand pipe that has the grey top (it has a hollow tube).  By filling this way, you help purge air from the system.

When the spa is filled, turn your power back on and start your normal spa start-up procedure for your chemical system.

Finally, this is also a great time to maintain your spa’s cover.  Clean the cover with a mild cleaning solution and rinse.  If you notice any “dipping” of your cover towards the middle, it may be time to “flip” the cores of the cover.  Over time, they may begin to sag and by flipping them you slow that process down and make your cover last much longer.  Any question on how, please call the store for instructions.  Also this is a great time after the cover dries to coat the cover with a good vinyl treatment such as Protectant 303.

And for those who would like all of this done “magically”, call Hot Spring Spas of Dayton and ask for our “Signature Valet Service”.

APRIL- Stress Awareness Month

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. As a result, the person becomes overworked and stress-related tension builds.

Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress — a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.

We all have stress in our lives so lets make sure we use our HotSpring Spa or Finnleo sauna so we don’t fall into the negative effects of stress .  Whether its immersing ourselves into the warm swirling water of our Hot Spring Spa or the warmth of our Finnleo sauna relieving our stress from our lives, make sure we are using these stress relivers so we can live a better and healthier life, not to metion it will help us feel and look younger.
